WPCentrify Live Chat Review: What a WordPress Agency Really Thinks

  • September 27, 2026
Leading Digital Agency Since 20017.

Every agency knows this story. A client’s website gets steady traffic, the contact form gets a handful of enquiries a week, and nobody can explain the gap between the two. People visit, look around, have one question, and leave because there is nobody to ask.

We have spent years closing that gap for businesses across Europe, the United States and the United Kingdom, mostly with better pages, clearer offers and faster websites. Live chat was always the obvious missing piece, and also the one we were least happy with. Most tools are built for one business with one website, not for an agency looking after many.

So when WPCentrify, the WordPress management platform we already use, added live chat, we switched it on for marqira.com and gave it a proper workout. This is our honest WPCentrify live chat review: what impressed us, what is still missing, and who we think it suits.

A quick note before we start: MarQira is a WPCentrify partner. We use the platform ourselves, and we have included the parts we think still need work.

What is WPCentrify live chat?

WPCentrify live chat, which the product calls Live Agent, puts a chat window on a WordPress website so a real person can answer visitors in real time, while they are still on the page. The difference is where it lives. It is not another WordPress live chat plugin. It is part of WPCentrify, the dashboard agencies use for updates, backups, security and uptime across many WordPress sites, and it is added by the connector plugin those sites already run.

That one detail shaped our whole experience. There was nothing new to install, nothing new to keep updated, and nothing extra to break the next time a theme update lands.

Setting it up on marqira.com

On a website that is already connected to WPCentrify, setup takes a few minutes. This is the order we followed:

  1. Switch live chat on in the website’s chat settings and pick a mode: live chat only, or together with the AI assistant.
  2. Set the hours and the look. Business hours, time zone and holidays, then the colour, position, logo, light or dark theme and welcome message.
  3. Choose who answers. Add your own agents and teams, or hand the website to the client’s staff.
  4. Press Check the live page to confirm the chat window really appears to visitors.

That last button deserves a mention. Caching and script optimisation plugins are the most common reason a chat widget quietly disappears from a live site. Check the live page loads the real public page and confirms the widget is there, so you find out before your client does.

What impressed us

One desk for every website

This is the feature that sold us. Chats from every website you switch on arrive in one agent desk, each labelled with the site it came from. You can see who is waiting, who is talking to whom, and which chat needs you first. Each website still keeps its own colour, logo, welcome message, business hours and team, so a dental practice and a law firm never share a chat window.

For an agency, this removes the most tiring part of live chat: logging in and out of separate accounts to check whether anyone is waiting.

Every chat turns into a lead

While you talk, a lead card fills itself in on the right of the desk with the visitor’s email, phone number and what they need. One click saves it to Lead Captures, right next to the site’s contact form enquiries. For our clients, that means chat enquiries are counted and followed up like every other lead, instead of living in a separate inbox nobody checks.

You can see what the visitor is looking at

Every chat shows the visitor’s country and city, device, local time and the page they are reading right now. It sounds small, but it changes the conversation. A typical enquiry on our site comes from someone reading our services page, and knowing that before we type a word means we answer the question they actually have.

Privacy is handled well too. Location comes from a database on WPCentrify’s own servers, and the visitor’s IP address is never sent to a web service or stored.

Quick replies and a queue that keeps you honest

Type a forward slash and a saved answer drops in, with placeholders such as the visitor’s name filled in for you. New chats ring until someone accepts them, and the waiting timer turns amber at 40 seconds and red at two minutes. Nobody on the team needs reminding that a visitor is waiting.

The queue is ordered by a weighted score. Someone who asked for a person, gave their contact details or looks ready to buy moves up, while the time spent waiting weighs most, so nobody is left at the bottom. You can let agents pick from the queue, or assign chats round-robin or to whoever is least busy, and set how many chats each person can take at once.

If you want to set targets, WPCentrify has published a useful guide to live chat response time with sourced benchmarks.

After hours, visitors leave a message

Outside the business hours you set, including holidays, a visitor who wants to talk to someone leaves their details and a message instead of sitting in a queue that nobody is watching. We reply in the morning, and the enquiry is not lost overnight.

An AI assistant that hands over properly

Live chat works on its own, or behind the WPCentrify AI chatbot. You can choose per website: assistant only, live chat only, both, or neither. When the assistant hands a conversation to a person, the agent receives the full transcript, who the visitor is, the page they are on, the details they already gave and a short summary. Nobody has to ask the same question twice, which is exactly where most chatbot handovers fall apart.

A summary of every chat

When a chat closes, WPCentrify’s own AI model writes a short record of what the visitor wanted, what was answered or promised, and the next step. Conversations are not sent to an outside AI service to be summarised. Scrolling through yesterday’s chats becomes a quick read of what people asked for, which is surprisingly useful when you plan content and offers.

It does not slow the website down

As an agency that works on SEO, this was our first question. Only a tiny loader for the round launcher button loads with the page. The chat itself loads when someone opens it, so visitors who never click it never download it. The widget runs inside a Shadow DOM, which means the theme cannot break it and it cannot restyle the theme, and it works behind WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache and Cloudflare Rocket Loader.

Clients can answer their own chats

Some clients want their own people answering, because only their receptionist knows whether Tuesday at three is free. WPCentrify lets you hand a website’s chat to the client. Their receptionists sign in to a simpler client desk and see nothing about your other clients. The client’s owner also decides whether the agency can read their transcripts and see their team’s ratings, and every change is logged. We have not seen another tool handle that relationship this carefully.

What your visitors see

The chat window feels like part of the website rather than a bolted-on box. From the visitor’s side, this is what stood out to us:

  • A real name. When a person joins, the visitor sees their first name, initial and a live dot. Surnames and email addresses stay inside the desk.
  • Where they stand. Their place in the queue and the usual reply time, so nobody wonders whether anyone is there.
  • Typing and read receipts on both sides.
  • Nothing lost on a reload. Messages survive a page refresh or a dropped connection and send themselves when the connection is back.
  • Optional forms. A pre-chat form for name and email can be switched off, so visitors can start typing straight away.
  • A rating and a transcript. When the chat ends, the visitor rates it poor, okay or good and can have the transcript emailed to them.

What is still missing

No tool is perfect, and WPCentrify is open about what live chat does not do yet:

  • File attachments. Visitors cannot send a screenshot or a document in the chat yet.
  • Proactive messages. The chat window does not open itself on a rule, such as after 30 seconds on a pricing page.
  • Other channels. There is no WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram inbox alongside the website chat.
  • Limiting agency agents to particular clients is not available yet.

None of these were deal breakers for us, but if your sales process depends on one of them today, it is worth knowing up front. One thing we did like: there is no preview of what a visitor is typing before they press send. WPCentrify left that out on purpose, for the visitor’s privacy.

How it compares with tawk.to, Tidio, Crisp and onWebChat

All four are established live chat tools, and for a single website any of them can be the right choice. The differences show up when you run chat across many WordPress sites. WPCentrify gives every site its own settings, answers them all from one desk, lets clients run their own team with control over what the agency sees, and sits in the same dashboard as your updates, backups and form leads.

Where the others are ahead: tawk.to, Tidio and Crisp bring WhatsApp and other messaging channels into the same inbox, and onWebChat offers proactive triggers, file sharing and mobile apps. WPCentrify’s feature page has a side-by-side comparison if you want the detail.

Who should use WPCentrify live chat?

Based on our time with it, WPCentrify live chat is a strong fit for:

  • Agencies and freelancers who manage several client WordPress websites
  • Businesses that run more than one website or brand
  • Clients who want their own receptionist or sales team answering chats
  • Teams already using WPCentrify for updates, backups and security

It is a weaker fit if you need social and messaging channels in one inbox, or if proactive pop-up messages are central to how you sell.

Pricing

Live chat is free during WPCentrify’s early access. After that, it is switched on per website within the number of websites your plan allows, and everyone who answers chats uses an agent seat, including a client’s own receptionists. Removing the Powered by WPCentrify footer from the chat window is a paid white label add-on.

Our verdict

WPCentrify live chat does the fundamentals well: a fast, clean chat window, a desk built for handling several conversations at once, and leads that land where the rest of your enquiries already are. What lifts it above a typical WordPress live chat plugin is that it was clearly designed by people who look after many websites. One desk, per-site settings, a proper AI handover and a client desk with real privacy controls are things we had been working around for years.

If you manage WordPress websites for other people, it is well worth switching on for one site and seeing how your team gets on. You can read the full feature breakdown on the WPCentrify live chat page.

Frequently asked questions

Is WPCentrify live chat free?

Yes, during early access. After that, live chat is switched on per website within your WPCentrify plan, and everyone who answers chats uses an agent seat.

Do I need a separate live chat plugin for WordPress?

No. On a website already connected to WPCentrify, the connector plugin adds the chat window with one script tag. A site without the connector can paste the chat snippet into its footer by hand.

Does WPCentrify live chat slow down a WordPress site?

Very little. Only a tiny loader for the launcher button loads with the page, and the chat itself loads when a visitor opens it. It also works behind popular caching plugins such as WP Rocket and LiteSpeed Cache.

Can WPCentrify live chat work with an AI chatbot?

Yes. You can run the AI assistant, live chat, both or neither on each website. When the assistant hands over, the agent receives the full transcript, the visitor’s details, the page they are on and a short summary.

Can a client’s own staff answer the chats?

Yes. You can hand a website’s chat to the client, and their receptionists answer from a separate client desk. The client decides whether the agency can read their transcripts.

Is WPCentrify a good tawk.to or Tidio alternative?

For agencies running chat on many WordPress sites, yes. If you need WhatsApp or social channels in the same inbox today, tawk.to, Tidio and Crisp currently offer that.
